Our History – Over 100 Years of Craftsmanship and Service
Founded in 1919 by Jack Gard, J Gard & Sons began in Chelmsford selling firewood before expanding into timber, fencing and sheds. Over the decades, the company grew through dedication, hard work and family values – surviving wars, recessions and major industry changes.
Now led by Martyn and Kevin Gard, the grandson and great-grandson of the founder, the company continues from its modern site in East Hanningfield. Still proudly independent and family-run, J Gard & Sons is today one of the largest timber merchants in Essex, known for quality materials, genuine expertise and a personal touch that big chains simply can’t match.

We offer a full delivery service Monday to Saturday across Chelmsford, Maldon, Braintree, Basildon, Colchester, Brentwood and the wider Essex and London areas, using our own fleet of vehicles and a team of friendly, helpful drivers.
Our modern, extensive fleet includes small flatbeds, larger vehicles, and Hiab (crane) lorries in various sizes, allowing us to meet diverse delivery requirements, from restricted-access properties to large-scale commercial projects.
Standard deliveries are usually made within 2–3 working days, with next-day delivery often available for in-stock items during quieter periods. Thanks to our driver tracking system, we can provide real-time delivery updates and estimated arrival times on request.
