Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is compost?
Compost is a natural soil improver made from decomposed organic matter. It’s packed with nutrients and microorganisms that enrich soil, improve drainage, and support plant health.

2. What is compost used for?
Compost is commonly used for:

  • Improving soil structure and fertility

  • Mulching around plants to retain moisture

  • Filling beds, pots, and planters

  • Blending with topsoil for turfing or levelling

  • Agricultural land improvement

3. What size are your bulk bags of compost?
Each bag contains approximately 900 litres of compost – equivalent to nearly a tonne in weight, depending on moisture content.

4. Are your bulk bags returnable?
Our bulk bags are non-returnable. We ask customers to reuse or recycle them responsibly – they make excellent garden waste sacks!

5. How do you deliver? What size lorry do you deliver on?
We operate our own fleet of vehicles and deliver Monday to Saturday across Essex.

  • We use smaller Hiabs for tighter access and larger Hiab lorries for bulk loads.

  • Delivery is kerbside only, and access will need to be safe for our vehicles.

6. Should I use compost or topsoil?
It depends on your project:

  • Compost improves fertility and is great for beds, borders, and as mulch.

  • Topsoil is better for turfing, levelling, and building up ground levels.
Many gardeners use a blend of both for best results.

7. Can you lift bags over my fence/wall?
Our standard policy is kerbside delivery only. However, at the driver’s discretion, we may be able to lift bags over a fence or wall if it’s safe to do so.
Please note:

  • Overhead cables or low branches may prevent lifting.

  • Our larger Hiab vehicles can lift over obstacles where access allows.

  • If you need this service, please ensure someone is at home to assist the driver.

8. Is your compost safe for all plants?
Yes – our compost is PAS100 certified, meaning it’s been tested and is safe for use with all plants, including vegetables, fruit trees, flowers, and shrubs.

9. Can I use compost on its own or should I mix it?
You can use compost on its own for mulching and top dressing, but for turfing, filling, or large beds, most people mix it with topsoil to improve structure and balance.
